Action in Motion: Al-Jumla al-Fiʿliyya (الجملة الفعلية)
In our previous lesson, we looked at sentences that describe things. Today, we look at sentences that describe actions. The Verbal Sentence (Al-Jumla al-Fiʿliyya) is a sentence that starts with a verb and tells us what happened and who did it.
The Three Parts of a Verbal Sentence
A complete Verbal Sentence usually consists of two or three main parts:
1. Al-Fiʿl (الفعل)
The Verb. This is the action itself. It always comes at the very beginning of the sentence.
2. Al-Fāʿil (الفاعل)
The Doer/Subject. This is the noun that performs the action. It always comes after the verb.
3. Al-Mafʿūl Bihi (المفعول به)
The Object. This is the noun that receives the action (if the verb needs one).
A Simple Example
Let's look at a basic sentence structure:
قَرَأَ الطَّالِبُ الْكِتَابَ
Qaraʾa al-Tālibu al-Kitāba
"The student read the book."
- قَرَأَ (Read): This is the Fiʿl (Verb).
- الطَّالِبُ (The Student): This is the Fāʿil (The one who did the reading).
- الْكِتَابَ (The Book): This is the Mafʿūl Bihi (The thing that was read).
The Rule of I'rāb (Endings)
One of the most important things in Nahw is knowing the vowel on the last letter. In a Verbal Sentence:
- The Fāʿil (Doer) is always Marfūʿ (ends with a Damma: 'u').
- The Mafʿūl Bihi (Object) is always Mansūb (ends with a Fatha: 'a').
Look closely at our example: At-Tālibu (Doer) vs Al-Kitāba (Object).
