Mastering the Arabic Present Tense: Al-Fiʿl al-Mudāriʿ Conjugation

The Ongoing Action: Al-Fiʿl al-Mudāriʿ (الفعل المضارع)

The Mudāriʿ verb represents actions happening right now or in the future. Unlike the past tense, which only changes at the end, the present tense adds a "marker" at the beginning to signal the person.

The "Anaytu" Prefixes

Every present tense verb must start with one of these four letters (أ-ن-ي-ت):

  • أ (Alif): Used for "I" (Ana).
  • ن (Noon): Used for "We" (Nahnu).
  • ي (Ya): Used for "He," "They (m)," and "They (f plural)."
  • ت (Ta): Used for "You (all forms)," "She," and "They (f dual)."

Important Note: Present vs. Future

By default, Yafʿalu means "he does." To make it strictly future ("he will do"), we simply add the prefix Sa- (سَـ) for the near future or the word Sawfa (سَوْفَ) for the distant future before the verb.

Example: سَيَفْعَلُ (Sayafʿalu) - He will do.

Practice Challenge:

Try it with the root D-R-S (د ر س) - to study.
How would you say "We study"?
(Hint: Look for the 'Noon' prefix in the table!)

What's Next?

We've mastered the Past and the Present. Now it's time to give orders! Our next lesson will be on **Fiʿl al-Amr (The Command Verb)** and how we derive it from the present tense.
