True Bonds: 5 Idioms about Friendship
In the Arab world, a friend is often considered a brother or sister you choose. After discussing Success and Hard Work in Part 3, we now explore the idioms of loyalty.
1. الصَّدِيقُ وَقْتَ الضِّيق (As-sadiqu waqt ad-diq)
Literal: A friend [is found] in times of distress.
The Wisdom: This is the direct Arabic equivalent of "A friend in need is a friend indeed." It emphasizes that true loyalty is only proven during difficult times, not during celebrations.
2. رُبَّ أَخٍ لَمْ تَلِدْهُ أُمُّك (Rubba akhin lam talidhu ummuk)
Literal: Many a brother was not born of your mother.
The Wisdom: This beautiful proverb is used to describe a very close friend whose loyalty and love make them feel like immediate family. It celebrates the deep spiritual bond of chosen brotherhood.
3. المُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ أَخِيه (Al-mumin Mir'atu akhihi)
Idiom: اَلْمُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ أَخِيهِ
Literal: A believer is the mirror of his brother.
The Wisdom: A true friend reflects your reality back to you. If you have a flaw, they tell you privately to help you improve; if you have a virtue, they reflect it. It’s about honest, constructive friendship.
4. اِخْتَرِ الصَّدِيق (Ikhtar as-sadiq)
Idiom: اِخْتَرِ الصَّدِيقَ قَبْلَ الطَّرِيق
Literal: Choose the companion before the path.
The Wisdom: Before starting any journey or project, ensure you are with the right people. The quality of your company is more important than the destination itself.
5. مَنِ اتَّكَلَ عَلَى زَادِ غَيْرِهِ (Man ittakala 'ala zadi ghayrihi)
Idiom: مَنِ اتَّكَلَ عَلَى زَادِ غَيْرِهِ.. طَالَ جُوْعُهُ
Literal: He who relies on the provisions of others will stay hungry.
The Wisdom: While friendship is important, this warns against over-dependence. True friends support each other, but loyalty should not lead to laziness or taking advantage of others.
