Master Media Arabic: 5 Essential Verbs for Reading the News

Media Arabic Series: Part 1

Decoding the News: Power Verbs

Have you ever opened a news app like Al Jazeera or BBC Arabic and felt overwhelmed? News Arabic follows a specific rhythm and uses a specialized set of "Power Verbs." Master these, and you can understand 50% of any headline!

1. The "Big Three" of Journalism

These three verbs are the foundation of almost every political headline:

The Verb (Arabic) Meaning Example
أَعْلَنَ (A'lana) Announced أعلنت الحكومة... (The gov announced...)
أَكَّدَ (Akkada) Confirmed / Stressed أكد الرئيس على... (The President stressed on...)
بَحَثَ (Bahatha) Discussed / Researched بحث الطرفان الأزمة... (Both sides discussed the crisis...)

2. Verbs of Action & Movement

When leaders travel or meet, media outlets use these specific terms:

إِسْتَقْبَلَ (Istaqbala)
Meaning: To Receive / Meet
Used when a host welcomes an official guest.
وَقَّعَ (Waqqa'a)
Meaning: To Sign
Used for treaties, agreements (إتفاقيات), or contracts.

💡 Pro-Tip for Media Arabic

In news headlines, verbs often appear at the very beginning of the sentence (Verbal Sentence / Jumla Fi'liyya). Unlike English headlines ("The President Met..."), Arabic headlines often start with the action: "Met the President..." (إلتقى الرئيس...).
