The Five Universals (Al-Kulliyat al-Khams) in Islamic Logic

Classifying Reality: The Five Universals (Al-Kulliyat al-Khams)

How do we define what a human is? Or what a chair is? In our previous lesson on Al-Alfadh, we learned how words point to meanings. Today, we dive into Al-Kulliyat al-Khams (The Five Universals)—the framework used by logicians to categorize everything in the universe.

When we look at a "Universal" (Kulli), we are looking at a concept that can be applied to many individuals. For example, the concept of "Book" applies to every book in existence. These universals are divided into five types:

1. Jins (Genus)

The Jins is a broad category that includes different types of things. It answers the question: "What is it fundamentally?"
Example: "Animal" is the Jins for humans, lions, and horses.

2. Nau' (Species)

The Nau' is a more specific category that falls under the Jins. It represents a group of individuals that share the same essence.
Example: "Human" is the Nau' that falls under the Jins of "Animal."

3. Fasl (Differentia)

The Fasl is the specific characteristic that distinguishes one Nau' from another within the same Jins.
Example: "Rationality" (Natiq) is the Fasl for humans. It is what separates a human from a lion, even though both are animals.

4. Khassah (Property)

The Khassah is a characteristic that is unique to a specific Nau' but is not part of its core essence.
Example: "The ability to laugh" or "The ability to write." Only humans do these things, but a human is still a human even if they don't laugh or write.

5. 'Arad 'Am (General Accident)

The 'Arad 'Am is a characteristic that is shared by many different types of things across different categories.
Example: "Walking" or "Sleeping." Humans walk, but so do lions and insects. It doesn't define what a human uniquely is.

Why is this important?

Without these five universals, we cannot create a Hadd (Formal Definition). In Mantiq, a perfect definition usually consists of the Jins + Fasl.

Definition of Human = Animal (Jins) + Rational (Fasl).

Now that you know the ingredients (The Five Universals), I will show you how to cook the perfect definition! In the next post, we will learn the rules of At-Ta'rif so you can define any concept with pinpoint accuracy.
