All Form I present tense verbs begin with one of four prefixes:

Vowel Patterns
Most Form I verbs follow this pattern in present tense:
Prefix (يَ) + Root (كتب) + ḍammah (ـُ) on second root letter
Exception: فَعِلَ verbs like سَمِعَ (to hear):
