Conversation Series: Lesson 5 (The Finale)

At the Airport (فِي الْمَطَار)

We’ve met new friends, asked for directions, eaten delicious food, and shopped at the market. Now, in our series finale, we prepare for departure! In Lesson 4 we learned to bargain; here, we learn the formal language of travel.

الحِوار (The Dialogue)

مُوَظَّفُ الْمَطَار (Airport Officer): مَرْحَبًا، أَعْطِنِي جَوَازَ السَّفَرِ، لَوْ سَمَحْت.
(Hello, give me the passport, please.)

الْمُسَافِر (The Traveler): تَفَضَّل، هَذَا هُوَ جَوَازُ السَّفَر.
(Here you go, this is the passport.)

الْمُوَظَّف: أَيْنَ تَهْبِطُ الطَّائِرَة؟
(Where is the plane landing?)

الْمُسَافِر: سَأُسَافِرُ إِلَى الْقَاهِرَةِ إِنْ شَاءَ الله.
(I will travel to Cairo, God willing.)

الْمُوَظَّف: هَلْ مَعَكَ حَقَائِبُ كَثِيرَة؟
(Do you have many bags/suitcases?)

الْمُسَافِر: لَا، حَقِيبَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَقَط.
(No, one suitcase only.)

الْمُوَظَّف: حَسَنًا، هَذِهِ بِطَاقَةُ الصُّعُودِ إِلَى الطَّائِرَة. رِحْلَةً سَعِيدَة!
(Alright, here is the boarding pass. Have a happy trip!)

✈️ Travel Tip: The Airport Lexicon

When searching for your gate, look for the word بَوَّابَة (Bawwabah). If you hear an announcement for your flight, the word for "Departure" is مُغَادَرَة (Mughadarah) and "Arrival" is وُصُول (Wusul).
