Arabic Daily Life Part 1: Essential Shopping & Market Vocabulary

Daily Life Series: Part 1

The Local Market (فِي السُّوق)

The سُوق (Souq) is more than just a place to buy things; it is the social center of the city. To get the best deals and the freshest produce, you need to speak the language of the merchant!

1. Essential Shopping Terms (مُصْطَلَحَاتُ التَّسَوُّق)

سِعْر (Si'r) - Price
Example: كَمْ سِعْرُ هَذَا الْقَمِيص؟
(How much is the price of this shirt?)
طَازَج (Tazaj) - Fresh
Example: هَلِ الْفَوَاكِهُ طَازَجَةٌ الْيَوْم؟
(Is the fruit fresh today?)
غَالِي (Ghali) - Expensive
Example: هَذَا السِّعْرُ غَالٍ جِدًّا!
(This price is very expensive!)

2. Quantities & Payments (الْكَمِّيَّاتُ وَالدَّفْع)

English Arabic Example Sentence
Kilo كِيلُو أُرِيدُ كِيلُو مِنَ التُّفَّاح.
Change (Money) فَكَّة / بَاقِي هَلْ مَعَكَ فَكَّة؟
Discount تَخْفِيض هَلْ هُنَاكَ تَخْفِيضٌ لِي؟

⚖️ The Art of "Fasala" (Bargaining)

In the market, bargaining is expected. If a merchant gives you a price, you can politely say: "آخِر كَلَام؟" (Akhir kalam?) which means "Is that your final word?". This often leads to a better price!

Coming Up in Part 2: Ordering at the Restaurant (فِي الْمَطْعَم)!

Master the menu and the table manners.
