Conversation Series: Lesson 2

Asking for Directions (السُّؤَالُ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ)

In our previous lesson, we learned how to introduce ourselves. But what if you are lost in a beautiful Arabic-speaking city? Today, we learn how to ask "Where is...?" and understand the directions given in response.

الحِوَار (The Dialogue)

السَّائِح (The Tourist): مَعْذِرَةً يَا سَيِّدِي، أَيْنَ الْمُسْتَشْفَى؟
(Excuse me sir, where is the hospital?)
الرَّجُل (The Man): الْمُسْتَشْفَى بَعِيدٌ قَلِيلًا مِنْ هُنَا.
(The hospital is a little far from here.)
السَّائِح: كَيْفَ أَصِلُ إِلَى هُنَاك؟
(How do I get there?)
الرَّجُل: اِذْهَبْ لِلأَمَام، ثُمَّ اتَّجِهْ يَمِينًا عِنْدَ الْمَطْعَم.
(Go forward, then turn right at the restaurant.)
السَّائِح: هَلْ هُوَ بِجَانِبِ الْمَصْرِف (البنك)؟
(Is it beside the bank?)
الرَّجُل: نَعَم، هُوَ بِجَانِبِ الْمَصْرِفِ تَمَامًا.
(Yes, it is exactly beside the bank.)
السَّائِح: شُكْرًا جَزِيلاً لَكَ!
(Thank you very much!)

Spatial Vocabulary (الْمُفْرَدَات)

Direction / Place Arabic Transliteration
To the Right يَمِينًا Yaminan
To the Left يَسَارًا Yasaran
Straight Ahead لِلأَمَام Lil-amam
Hospital مُسْتَشْفَى Mustashfa
Restaurant مَطْعَم Mat'am

🎓 Grammar Connection: I'rab Reminder

Notice the word يَمِينًا (Yaminan). Because it acts as an adverb of place, it takes the Nasb (Fatha) ending! This is a great example of how our grammar series applies to real speech.

Next Time: Ordering delicious food at a restaurant! (Lesson 3)
