The First Meeting (اللقاء الأول)

Mastering the basics of MSA greetings and introductions.

Welcome to our new series! After mastering grammar, it's time to put those rules into practice. In this first lesson, we look at a standard, polite conversation between two people meeting for the first time in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).

الحِوَار (The Dialogue)

أَحْمَد: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُه.
(Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.)
سَارَة: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام وَرَحْمَةُ الله.
(And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.)
أَحْمَد: كَيْفَ حَالُكِ يَا أُخْتِي؟
(How are you, my sister?)
سَارَة: أَنَا بِخَيْرٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّه، وَأَنْتَ كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟
(I am fine, praise God. And you, how are you?)
أَحْمَد: بِخَيْرٍ، شُكْرًا لَكِ. أَنَا أَحْمَد، مَا اسْمُكِ؟
(Fine, thank you. I am Ahmad, what is your name?)
سَارَة: اسْمِي سَارَة. تَشَرَّفْنَا يَا أَحْمَد.
(My name is Sarah. Honored to meet you, Ahmad.)
أَحْمَد: الشَّرَفُ لِي. فُرْصَةٌ سَعِيدَةٌ جِدًّا.
(The honor is mine. A very happy opportunity [Nice to meet you].)

Key Vocabulary & Phrases

Arabic Meaning
تَشَرَّفْنَا Honored to meet you
فُرْصَة سَعِيدَة Nice to meet you (lit: Happy chance)
كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ How are you? (to a male)
كَيْفَ حَالُكِ؟ How are you? (to a female)

💡 Language Tip: The "Stopping" Rule

In conversational MSA, we often don't pronounce the final vowel (Haraka) when we stop speaking. Instead of saying "Kayfa haluka", many people say "Kayfa haluk". This sounds more natural and fluent!

Did you enjoy this first conversation? Part 2 will cover "Asking for Directions!"
